24 Club (no fee)
Grades 3-5: Mondays October – April
The 24 Club will be held on Mondays before school from 7:45am – 8:50am starting October 1, 2018 and ending mid April 8, 2019. There will be a regional competition in Mar/April, date to be determined. Details will be shared when they become available. Please email any questions about this activity at HES to firstname.lastname@example.org.
If your child is interested in participating, please complete the form below and return it to school by September 21st. Students will be selected at random and notified if they were selected.

Chess (student participation fee)

Come Sting the King with Hillsmere’s very own Chess Club! The sessions for grades 3-5 is offered on Friday mornings before school. The Hillsmere Chess Club is excited that Greg Acholonu will return as our chess club instructor. Mr. Acholonu is a National Master and a U.S. Chess Federation Certified Coach. He has been teaching children to play chess for over a decade and has served as an instructor at the U.S. Chess Center in Washington, DC, and now leads chess programs at several public and private schools in Anne Arundel County. No experience is necessary and all equipment will be provided. Students will have the opportunity (but are not required) to compete in one or more local chess tournaments.

Coding Club (no fee)
Grades 3-5: Mondays October – December
Grades K-2: Dates and Times to be determined
In order to offer material to fit all age groups, the Coding Club has been divided into 2 sessions. Session 1 will be for students in grades 3-5. It be on Monday mornings in the fall for 8 weeks starting on October 1st from 7:45am – 8:50am. Session 2 is for grades K-2 with dates and times to be determined.
Students in grades 1 – 5 who are interested in participating are asked to write 3 – 4 sentences on why they would like to participate in the club. Kindergarten students are asked to use a combination of pictures, letters, numbers and words to show why they would be interested in the club. There is no cost for students to participate. If your child is interested in participating in Session 1 (3-5), please complete the form below, attach the writing to the application, and return it all to school by September 21st. Students will be selected at random and notified if they were selected. Session 2 forms will be sent out in January.

MESA (no fee)
Grades 3-5: October – April
This is a county-supported club offered at Hillsmere Elementary School students in grades 3-5. Throughout the academic year, students conduct research and prepare to participate in competitions that demonstrate to educators and parents what they have learned through participation in the MESA program. Yoga (student participation fee)

Drama Club (School Play)

Lego Robotics (No fee)
Grades 3-5: Mondays October 1st – November 19th
Grades K-2: Mondays February 4th – April 15th
Lego Robotics is for children ages 5-10. Teams of 3 children will design and construct a model using Legos and motorized parts, present their projects, and build teamwork skills.
The club will be held on Monday afternoons from 4-5 pm. There will be two sessions that last 8 weeks long. Students must be picked up at 5 p.m. and need to have transportation.
There has been a lot of interest in this opportunity and it is limited to 12 participants per session. We are asking students to write 3-4 sentences about why they would like to participate in the Lego Robotics Club. Please attach their writing to the application. Students will be selected at random and notified if they were selected. If your child is interested in participating, please complete the form below and return it to school by September 21st.
