Lego Robotics is for children ages 6-10. Teams of 3 children will design and construct a model using Legos and motorized parts, present their projects, and build teamwork skills. The club is offered as two 8 week sessions with 12 children per session. Our current lead is the amazing Mrs. Norris, a Kindergarten teacher at Hillsmere Elementary School. This is a county-supported club offered at Hillsmere Elementary School students in grades 3-5. Throughout the academic year, students conduct research and prepare to participate in competitions that demonstrate to educators and parents what they have learned through participation in the MESA program. Huddle Up and get ready for Flag Football to become an instant classic. Kids are lining up to score touchdowns and get a taste of the most popular game in the country! Players will get a chance to be running backs, wide receivers, defensive ends, and corner backs. Learn to pass, catch, run routes and punt like the pros! We’ll practice these skills while playing Button Hook, Down & Out, Pitch & Run and First & Ten. Scrimmages and Red Zone Challenges will test your skills, promote teamwork and encourage sportsmanship. Let’s Play! Save the best for last by finishing the school day with Sports Spectacular, a variety athletic program that features different sports throughout the session. Participants will practice skills and play games in both traditional sports and playground favorites. The Sports Spectacular Variety Program features the best “to-do” list ever – Basketball, Soccer, Flag Football, Kickball, Capture the Flag, Wiffle Ball, Bump and Bite, Knights and Dragons, Numbers Game, Tag Games, Safe Base and MORE! The Coding club is back, but in a different format. In order to offer material to fit all age groups, the Coding Club has been divided into 2 sessions. Session 1 will be for students in grades K – 2 and Session 2 will be for grades 3-5. Students will be able to learn how to code through the use of code.org, scratch coding, and ozobots. For session 1, our lead is our new IT Lead at Hillsmere Elementary School, Ms. Baker. For session 2, the current club lead is one of Hillsmere’s very own fantastic teachers, Mrs. Welsh. Compass Rose Theater Club
Compass Rose Theater is back again for its second year at Hillsmere Elementary School! In this exciting program, students will be able to write and perform a play of their own creation led by a professional teaching artist from Compass Rose Theater. Hangs on Learning is an external organization focused on enriching the lives of children with various STEAM topics. For this fall, the following sessions will be available:
Grades K-2: Going Green a S.T.E.A.M.-integrated approach to environmental science, ecology, learning how the planet functions, and how to make positive impacts. Students will be doing in hands-on labs, activities, and art projects.
Grades 3-5: Laboratory Science! Students will be working like scientists as they explore concepts of chemistry, biology, and even some physics. We’ll practice skills like observation, experimentation, and analysis…plus we’ll play withsome pretty cool stuff!
All labs and hands-on activities are designed to engage and enrich students and develop their STEM proficiency.

Come Sting the King with Hillsmere’s very own Chess Club! This club is for grades 3-5 and is offered on Friday mornings before school starting 9/29/17. The Hillsmere Chess Club is excited that Greg Acholonu will return for his 4 nd year as our chess club instructor. Mr. Acholonu is a National Master and a U.S. Chess Federation Certified Coach. He has been teaching children to play chess for over a decade and has served as an instructor at the U.S. Chess Center in Washington, DC, and now leads chess programs at several public and private schools in Anne Arundel County.
No experience is necessary and all equipment will be provided. Students will have the opportunity (but are notrequired) to compete in one or more local chess tournaments.
